Compound sentence itu sendiri adalah tipe kalimat yang terdiri dari dua atau lebih independent clause dan simple clause. Ada beberapa kalimat yang dapat disebut dengan Coordinate conjuction yang menggunakan singkatan agar mudah diingat yaitu, FANBOYS, YAFNOBS, Or, FONYBAS.
Dengan arti:
F = for
A = and
N = nor
B = but
O = or
Y = yet
S = so
Examples :
- The man helped in sincerity, but many people thought negatively about him.
- What do you prefer to stay at home or go to the cinema on this weekend?
- I hate to waste a single drop of squid eyeball stew, for it is expensive and time-consuming to make.
- Even though I added cream to the squid eyeball stew, Rocky ignored his serving, so I got a spoon and ate it myself.
- Rocky terrorizes the poodles next door yet adores the German shepherd across the street.
- The bowl of squid eyeball stew is hot and delicious
- Rocky refuses to eat dry cat food, nor will he touch a saucer of squid eyeball stew.
Parallel construction means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. The usual way to join parallel construction is with the use of coordinating conjunctions such as "and" or "or."
Words and Phrases
With the -ing form (gerund) of words:
Parallel:
Mary likes hiking, swimming, and bicycling.
With infinitive phrases:
Parallel:
Mary likes to hike, to swim, and to ride a bicycle.
OR
Mary likes to hike, swim, and ride a bicycle.
OR
Mary likes to hike, swim, and ride a bicycle.
(Note: You can use "to" before all the verbs in a sentence or only before the first one.)
